Roanoke Valley
Consisting of Roanoke County, the cities of Salem and Roanoke, and the town of Vinton, the “Roanoke Valley” is the largest metropolitan area west of Richmond and one of the largest in the state with a population of around 300,000. Despite the heavy urbanization of the Roanoke Valley, natural amenities abound, many surprisingly close to the city hustle and bustle.
Heavily marketed as an outdoor destination, the Roanoke Valley features the Appalachian Trail running across its northern section, the Roanoke River running through it, and the Blue Ridge Parkway skirting Vinton and Roanoke in the south. Mill Mountain is the valley’s iconic landmark, while Carvins Cove just across I-81 is a national destination for mountain biking and is the second-largest city-owned park in America. The Blue Ridge Land Conservancy protects around 6,100 acres of land in the Roanoke Valley with 7 conservation agreements , ranging from Carvins Cove to Read and Mill mountains, and more than a mile of rivers and streams, including a portion of the Roanoke River adjacent to Explore Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway. |
Mountain bike tracks in Carvins Cove, one of the largest tracks of land protected by a conservation agreement in Virginia at 11,500 acres.
